Much fun was had by all and thanks to the massive effort put in by Todd and Kristy organising and running the event, the club has raised in excess of $3200. This evening was a huge success! Here’s a picture from the night…

=== From The Commodore ===
Opening Day was a great pleasure with a large number of invited guests, and the largest fleet of boats sailing that we have seen for several years on Opening Day. A big thank you is due to the many volunteers who helped with making the Opening Day a great success. Particular mentions need to be made of Peter and Trita Agar for once again acting as our Officers of the Day and MC and the many families that assisted with catering for the afternoon tea. Thank you also to the Flag Officers and Committee for their efforts.

Our new Basic Skills training course has commenced with 12 new participants and one carry over from the last course. It is great to see that every one of the clubs training boats is being utilised for the training course, and also that the club Flying Ant has been getting used by enthusiastic juniors.

We do still have a challenge ahead to keep working on numbers for all of our sailing sections, and we need our sailors to be encouraging their friends and acquaintances to come and join us. Membership forms and fees have been slowly trickling in and we do need to keep reminding our members and past members to please complete this formality as soon as possible.

The fund raising Quiz Night was a fantastic success and a big thankyou is owed to Todd and Kristy for their great work on this. The night raised over $3200 for the club!

Our next big challenge as a club is the Minnow State Championships which we are scheduled to host over the Labour Day long weekend in 2012. There is much work needed to be done in preparation and I encourage the membership to get behind this event and assist where they can.

=== Minnow Training Weekend ===

Despite the unfortunate weather, the Minnow Training Weekend held at Shelley Sailing Club on the 17th and 18th of September was a great success. 16 Minnow sailors from Shelley and TCYC spent a fun filled weekend at the club with coaching assistance comming from past Shelley juniors Martina Ciotti and Matt Jerwood. It was a great pre season warm up and training ready for the Minnow Nationals to be held at Rockingham form 6 to 11th of January.

Shelley Sailing Club has had a huge success at the elite Westsail Training Camp and State Youth Championships held from October 1 to 6. Shelley was represented in the Flying Ants at Westsail by Lisa Smith and Danial Brown on Public Enemy and Jack Kelly and Owen Ready on Lightning Jack. In the Minnows we were represented by York Shellard in Eliminator and Callum Green in Red Dragon. The four days of intensive training were followed by the State Youth Championships where our sailors really showed the benefits of their training programs with Jack and Owen winning the State Youth Championship in the Flying Ant and Callum winning the State Youth Championship in the Minnows. A huge Well Done! to all of our juniors for their efforts.

=== Opening Day ===

Opening Day is just around the corner on Sunday October 16. This is probably the biggest day of the year for showing off our great club to the many invited guests so we need everyone to make a special effort to be there and help make it another great success.
We want as many boats on the water as possible so please pull out all the stops and be there and support the club.
As usual we will be having afternoon tea for the invited guests while they watch the sailing and so everyone is asked to please bring a plate to help with the catering for this event.
Following the formalities of opening day we also have a casserole night so that the members and families can relax together and wind down from the days activities. So once again please bring a dish to share, and/or, some meat for the barbeque and we will have a quiet meal together at 6 pm.
This is your club! So please get involved and help to make Opening Day a great celebration for all and enjoy our great facilities.

The general program for the Opening Day’s activities is as follows:

09.00 Arrival, opening of Clubrooms, preparation for sailing
10.00 Junior Briefing
10.15 Junior Race
11.30 Inspection of Junior boats for prizes
11.30 – 12.30 Canteen open for Junior lunches (must be ordered at junior briefing)
11.50 Junior boats for afternoon racing parked for display on grass along footpath.
13.00 Arrival of Officials and Guests and refreshments
13.30 Opening Ceremony
13.45 Afternoon Briefing

14.00 10 minute Sound (To allow people to change and ready their boats)

Hi Heroners,
Only 1 more football game left, then it’s our turn. Time to dust off the boat and do the maintenance we were going to do in May, but just never got to. I hope the off season has been good to you, and everyone is keen to get back onto the water in our beautiful little Herons.

Welcome to PDSC to Dawson, Stephen and Alan, and families, and to the new members at Shelley SC that I have not met as yet. I look forward to seeing you all at the clubs in the near future. We have not had an AGM this year as you all will know, as I have had a very bad neck and back injury which saw me doing a great deal of nothing over a long period of time. Being a small business owner, there has been a lot of work to catch up on, and the onset of summer has made my job even busier. However, now that the season is upon us, we will have on very soon. Probably on a Friday night within the month.

We have also assembled a small committee to work toward the national championships to be held at PDSC over the Christmas/New Year period of 2012/13. There will be some discussion about this at the AGM, so everyone please come along and have some input. Don’t worry, you won’t be nominated to do anything, but if you want to help out, we would be glad to have you on board. I also have some thoughts about the style of racing, including some short course racing, and I think the more ideas we can get, the better our carnival will be.

Our club’s Opening Days are just around the corner, with PDSC on Saturday 15th October, and SSC on Sunday 16th October. I would strongly encourage members of both clubs to make the effort to come along to each other’s opening day. I know for a fact that the individual clubs would welcome you there. As well as that, I am digging out the old Traveller’s Trophy. This has not been in service now for many years, so I think it should come back out now that both clubs have good strong fleets of Herons. The idea being that you sail at your club in State events, and also sail at the other club in state events (such as opening days and state heats), and also head down to Bunbury for the Labour Day long weekend to sail in Koombana Bay. We have heat 7 of the State Championships there every year, and our fleet has been small in the last few years. The more events you participate in, the higher your chance of winning this trophy. A recognition of your efforts toward the Heron class! I would also like to hold a teams race at KBSC over the Labour Day long week end. This trophy has not been in service for far too long, and it has always been a fun style of racing. Something we can discuss at the AGM also. As you can tell by the tone of this e-mail, I feel it is time that we once again become a class of Herons, not just Herons sailed at 2 clubs.

If you have a Heron sitting in a back shed, not being sailed, taking up space, why not sell it. Get some cash for a holiday at Christmas. Our list of boats for sail is very small. We need to get hold of these boats sitting idle, and get them back on the water, building toward a big fleet at our national championships, and also for the good of the class. Any details can be sent directly to me, or through your class captain at your club.

I hope to see you all at PDSC on 15th, and SSC on 16th October.
